A hurley is a wooden stick measuring between 36 and 100 cm (14 to 40 inches) long with a flattened, curved end (called the bas), they are used to hit a sliotar (leather ball) in the Irish sport of hurling. They are also used in camogie, the female equivalent of hurling, and their hurley is often called a camogie stick.
Hurleys are mostly made from ash wood, the wood is taking from the base of the tree near the root, which is usually the only part used. The ash wood is usually purchased from local craftsmen in Ireland who still use traditional production methods. Why ash timber is used for making hurleys is because its strong and flexible with a good capacity for shock absorbency, this is the main reason ash has been traditionally used in Ireland for the production of hurleys.
Hurling is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men, the equivalent version played by women is called camogie. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players which are 15 on each side, it also includes substitutes. Hurling first began in the prehistoric origin. Senior inter-county matches last 70 minutes (35 minutes per half). All other matches last 60 minutes (30 minutes per half). For teams Under-13 and lower, games may be shortened to 50 minutes. Timekeeping is at the discretion of the referee who adds on stoppage time at the end of each half.
